We would now compare Telsa phone and iPhone, with the aim of providing a smartphone selection for each group age in order to make an informed decision.
Apple’s ambitious iPhone 17, heralding a seismic shift in the smartphone market, is about to be released. The iPhone 17’s release isn’t simply the launch of a new smartphone model; it offers a glimpse into Apple’s future technological direction and innovative capabilities. Rumors and predictions alone have already captured the attention of tech enthusiasts and the market worldwide. Specific changes, such as the inclusion of the A19 chip, enhanced camera performance, and design innovations, are further fuelling anticipation.
Apple’s moves will not be limited to the mobile market. The launch of the iPhone 17 represents the pinnacle of mobile technology and could create a new wave across the premium technology market. This wave will undoubtedly be felt by Tesla, which has established a unique position in its respective fields by pursuing innovation and future value. The actions of these two seemingly unrelated brands are actually intertwined, centered around the common keyword of innovation. Their competition is not a direct conflict, but rather a shift in the technology ecosystem.
Which is better? Telsa or iPhone?
The moves of Apple and Tesla, two major players in the technology market, always create unpredictable interactions. One of the most direct impacts the iPhone 17 launch will have on Tesla is the intensification of indirect competition in the premium consumer market. Both iPhone and Tesla prioritize innovative imagery and target high-end consumers. If consumers with limited capital spend heavily on high-performance smartphones, they may naturally have less room to invest in other high-end product categories, such as automobiles.
The expected price increase for the iPhone 17 could subtly influence these consumers’ purchasing decisions, ultimately increasing the likelihood that potential Tesla customers will opt for other cost-effective vehicles.

When will Tesla’s smartphone come out?
Elon Musk has given a clear response to the frequent claims about Tesla smartphones recently. In an interview with famed podcast host Joe Rogan, Elon Musk revealed that Tesla does indeed have the potential to produce a phone, but that the idea isn’t a priority.
In his interview, Elon Musk made statements on this topic. In his words, he revealed that “we can produce a phone because Tesla’s infrastructure is based on a Linux-based operating system. This allows us to produce a unique phone.” He also added that they do not want to take the step of creating such a proposal.
Elon Musk’s words continue and clearly show where he may need to intervene. He revealed that “if Apple or Google do something really bad, like start strictly controlling the app stores, then maybe we’ll think about it.” Of course, Elon Musk’s statements attracted everyone’s attention, due to his references to Apple and Google.
More About the Telsa Phone
Tesla’s strongman, making strong statements in his own unique style, criticized the two tech giants’ controlling power. He suggested that a measure to limit the app ecosystem could restrict users’ freedom. In such a situation, the emergence of a new Tesla device on the market could protect users’ freedom. Thus, even when talking about the production of a smartphone, the main objective would be to offer an alternative to a strong control system.
Elon Musk has already expressed interest in brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) instead of smartphones. These devices will be the focus of the tech world in the future, and his investments in projects like Neuralink are part of his vision. He believes that devices powered by brain signals will completely change how people interact with technology in the future.
“Every year, phone manufacturers offer devices that are a little thinner, a little brighter, but that’s not a revolutionary step,” Elon Musk said. He believes people will make their lives easier with technology far more advanced than current devices. As exciting as the prospect of Tesla producing a phone is, Elon Musk made it clear that they would only consider the idea if a very specific situation arose.

Why Are Satellite Phones Illegal?
Satellite phones also known as Sat Phones, are phones that are used for sending voice calls and messages directly to satellites. They are usually used in remote areas and in the case of emergency. Satellite phones are used by Government and big business organizations and even some individuals. But over time, government have implemented polices to regulate communications due to arising crime rates.
They have put in place, bans, licensing regulations, illegality and restrictions in certain countries and areas. In this blogpost, we’ll highlight reasons why Satellite phones are often illegal, the restrictions and licensing regulations on it, and how to legally use satellite phones. But first, what should you know about satellite phones and how do they work?
WHAT SATELLITE PHONES ARE AND HOW THEY WORK
Imagine a little family trekking through a beautiful mountain like the Andes, no smart device has no signal at all, to make situation worse, the closet town is quite far away, say three days away and the weather is not friendly. In a situation like that, a satellite becomes more than just a small box of phone- it becomes a saviour.
Satellite phones are devices built for adventures, journalists and for even people who work in the deep area of the Sahara.

ABOUT SATELLITE PHONES
Satellite telephony developed in the 1990s, under great auspices and with great investment. The clear goal was to replace cellular telephony and establish satellite technology as the new standard in mobile telecommunications, thanks to its ability to provide coverage over large geographic areas.
It quickly became clear, however, that this hypothesis was unrealistic, primarily due to the technology’s high costs, which made it uncompetitive, but also due to certain technological limitations, such as the large size of telephones. Today, despite these limitations, satellite telephony is effective on the market and is used in specific contexts and for specific needs.
Consider its use in the maritime sector, where it benefits from its extensive coverage, guaranteed even at sea where cellular telephony is less effective. Furthermore, it is used wherever a mobile device that guarantees successful communication is required, in a variety of usage situations and under any environmental conditions. Through satellite telephony, calls are guaranteed to be successful regardless of where the call is made or received.
Satellite telephony differs from cellular telephony in its operating mode. Specifically, the end user always accesses the telephone network privately (access reserved for a specific user) via radio waves propagated by systems positioned on satellites.
Currently, there are approximately 2,000 artificial satellites in orbit, carrying analog and digital terrestrial signals, transporting voice, video, and data. Satellite communication has two main components: the ground component, which consists of transmission over a wired or wireless network, reception, and auxiliary equipment; and the space component, which consists of the satellite itself.
A typical satellite connection involves the transmission or interconnection of a signal from the ground station to the satellite. The satellite then receives and amplifies the signal and retransmits it to the ground, where it is received and reamplified by terminals. Satellite receivers in the field include direct-to-home (DTH) satellite equipment, mobile receiving instruments on aircraft, satellite phones, and other handheld devices.
According to recent analyses, satellite telephony generates approximately $1.4 billion in annual revenue, driven primarily by three operators that alone share over 90% of the market. Active devices number over two million. Furthermore, the range of offerings has recently been expanding, seeking to attract new business customers to expand its traditional user base: the military, defence, and maritime sectors.
Satellite technology has not enjoyed widespread and uniform international deployment. Currently, its most widely used areas are North America, the Middle East, and Africa.
HOW DO SATELLITE PHONES WORK
Satellite like the usual smartphones, use cell towers to both send and receive messages. Although, unlike cellular phones, Satellite phones communicate directly with satellites orbiting Earth without the use of cables and the likes. That is why when our adventurers, the astronauts go to the moon, we can communicate with them.
There are two major types of Satellite networks. They are:
- THE LEO (Low Earth Orbit): LEO are to Iridium and Globalstar. These types of satellites move very quickly across the sky. They require phones to “switch” satellites at mid-call.
- THE GEO (Geostationary Earth Orbit): They are used by Inmarsat and Thuraya. These satellites, unlike LEO, stay in fixed positions, offering stable and constant coverage over large areas.
These major satellites offer network coverage in areas where cellular phone is useless, be it jungles, desserts or mountains.
How do Satellite Phones Differ from The Regular Phones
First, it’s important to understand the technological difference between a traditional cell phone and a satellite device. Unlike cell phones, which rely on ground-based towers (with exceptions like the iPhone 14+), satellite phones connect directly to orbiting satellites. This allows you to communicate no matter where you are on the planet: in the mountains, forests, deserts, or even at sea.
Here’s why this technology is essential:
- First, it allows access to 24/7 emergency assistance (services such as Airmedic, relatives, authorities).
- Then, it makes it easier to coordinate with your group if you get separated.
- Additionally, it allows you to receive critical weather updates in real time.
- Finally, it avoids any total breakdown in communication, which could quickly degenerate.
In the event of an accident, mechanical breakdown, or sudden weather changes, the lack of reliable communication leaves you defenseless.
Furthermore, some devices like the iPhone 14 use the Globalstar network, which has spotty coverage. Therefore, it’s essential to check the quality of service depending on your destination area.

HOW THE THURAYA SATELITES WORK
Thuraya is an operator primarily active in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, offering coverage of approximately 40% of the world’s territory. For greater detail on coverage areas, see the reference image. Located in the United Arab Emirates, according to some estimates, over 600,000 Thuraya devices have been sold since the service’s launch in 2001.
Thuraya currently operates two Boeing-made satellites: Thuraya 2 and Thuraya 3. The previous satellite, Thuraya 1, is no longer in use and was used, from 2001 to 2007, primarily for testing and backup purposes. Thuraya 2 was launched in 2003, is capable of handling 13,750 simultaneous voice calls, has an expected lifespan of 12 years, and weighs 3,200 kg.
It has two antennas, one in C-band and one in L-band, which support up to 300 separate spot beams (the satellite signal has concentrated power to cover a limited and specific area of the Earth called a spot beam), each configurable according to its intended use. Thuraya 3, launched in early 2008, provides coverage primarily in Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia, while Thuraya 3 primarily covers the Far East and Australasia.
As mentioned, Thuraya satellites use up to 300 spot beams to allow a limited number of L-band channels to be simultaneously reused multiple times by devices located around the world. Conceptually, each spot beam covers a small area, approximately 450 km in diameter, within which communication between the satellite and the device is independent of the transmission in the other spot beams.
The system is similar to GSM, in which the Earth is divided into cells, except that in this case the cells are served by an antenna positioned on a satellite with many spot beams rather than by individual antennas positioned on the ground and by various base stations.
Thuraya’s primary gateway, which allows connections to terrestrial communications networks, is located in the United Arab Emirates. Communication between the gateway and the satellite occurs in the C-band and uses an uplink at approximately 6 GHz and a downlink at approximately 3 GHz.
The Mobile Earth Station (MES) and the devices use the L-band to communicate with the satellite: the MES receives signals from the satellite in the range between 1.525 GHz and 1.559 GHz and transmits between 1.6265 GHz and 1.6605 GHz. As in GSM systems, Temporary Mobile Subscriber Identities (TMSI) systems are used to safeguard the identity of user devices and to identify them, which are periodically updated using encrypted signals.
THE IRIDIUM SATELLITE
The Iridium satellites, takes a different approach and uses the L-band for both upstream and downstream. Calls from the device are routed, via the satellite network, to the satellite currently communicating with a ground station, and are then sent to the public international telephone network. Consequently, monitoring can only be performed for L-band calls.
The tactical monitoring unit uses a single circular polarized antenna, which receives transmissions from all visible satellites and devices. These signals are converted to an intermediate frequency where they are processed by a software receiver that uses digital signal processing techniques.
This processing of the received signals is sent to a unit that analyses the content and information relating to the calls. All collected calls, as in the previous case, can optionally be stored in storage for analysis by a monitoring centre.
INTERCEPTION METHODS
Turning to a specific analysis of satellite communications interception methods, it can be stated that, depending on the operating conditions of the different systems, they can be implemented in one of two ways:
- Tactical
Comparing Thuraya and Iridium Technologies for Satellite Phones
Considering Thuraya and Iridium in particular, it should be emphasized that the former can be intercepted in both ways, while Iridium can only be managed through a tactical approach. Regarding Thuraya technology, monitoring systems passively intercept downlink signals from Thuraya satellites, both in C-band and L-band.
The strategic monitoring system requires two antennas. To activate monitoring of the C-band downlink transmission between the satellite and the ground station, the system requires a large parabolic antenna approximately seven meters in diameter. To monitor the L-band downlink transmission from the satellite to the device, a smaller antenna is sufficient.
ADVANTAGES OF SATELLITE PHONES
- They can be used in the case of emergencies.
- You can maintain one phone number and use it globally.
- Satellite phones are used in remote areas.
- They are the ultimate communication devices.
- Incoming calls are free.
DISADVANTAGES OF SATELITTE PHONES
– Satellite phones are bulkier.
– They are usually more expensive.
– They entirely infringe on local communication infrastructure.
– Satellite phones are mostly effective outdoors, especially Iridium satellite phones.
Why Are Satellite Phones Illegal
Some Government of a number of countries, have put regulatory policies and consequences on illegal use of Satellite phones. For example, the Libyan government has banned its citizens from using unregistered satellite phones. Illicit possession of such devices is punishable by death for treason. Here are some known key reasons why Satellite phones are restricted and regularized by the Government.
- For National Security and Counterterrorism
The makeup, of Satellite phones make it difficult for government to monitor. Terrorist, smugglers and other criminal groups use satellite phones to plan and communicate as they carry out their criminal acts. Because of this, some restrictions and regulatory policies were put in place.
- For the Sake of Censorship and Information Control
These Governments would like to have a serious control over phone communications, who said what and who what is said to. But satellite phones do not allow for that as they cannot be censored. Hence the restrictions and regulations.
- For the Safety of the Public
In times of emergencies or crises, governments usually prefer having a unified communication channel. When there is too much uncontrolled communication, it could affect proper coordinated response.
- Control of Borders
Governments like to maintain control over what occurs in and out of the country, especially communications. And, Satellite phones give parties involve, the freedom to communicate freely and globally.
- To Prevent Smuggling and Illegal Activities
Militant groups and smugglers often make use of Satellite phones because they are quite difficult to track.
Countries where Satellite Phones are Considered Illegal
Here is a list of countries where satellite phones are considered illegal and the restrictions given.
- INDIA: India has a very strict restriction on a number Satellite phones. For example, the Thuraya and Iridium. These satellite phones are banned unless permitted by the Government for special reasons. Failure to comply can lead to seizure and prosecution based on the Indian Telegraph Act (1885) and the Wireless Telegraphy Act.
- CHINA: In China too, satellite phones are heavily restricted or banned.
- MYANMAR: If you use satellite phones without a licensing order, it is considered as illegal.
- BANGLADESH: In Bangladesh too, satellite phones are considered illegal. If found in use without permission, it will seize.
- NIGERIA: Especially in Borno state, the military of the country has banned the use of satellite phones due to militant groups.
- CUBA
- NORTH KOREA
- CHAD
- SUDAN
- RUSSIA
In the above countries, satellite phones are heavily restricted both for citizens and foreigners with any authorized permits.
Exceptions and Legal Ways to Use Satellite Phones
There are often regulated systems on how to use satellite phones. We’ll review a few them:
- Special Permissions or Licencing: This is applicable to some specific groups and organizations. For examples, UN agencies, mining organizations, oil and gas companies, diplomatic corps and more.
- Customs/ Border Declarations: Sea travellers may be asked to show licensing permission of satellite phones at the border.
SUMMARY
In summary, the use of satellite phones may be banned or restricted in certain countries. But even in places where those restrictions are, they are still some exceptions.
Satellite Internet on your smartphone: how does it work?
Companies offering LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellite connectivity, such as Starlink and Globalstar, are signing important agreements with 5G mobile phone and terminal providers.
A new era of “hybrid” communications is dawning, in which connectivity will be available for enabled smartphones even in areas not covered by cellular networks. Initially, the service will be limited to emergency messages.
- Apple with Globalstar
Currently, Globalstar’s 48 satellites, covering the entire planet, offer a connection service available only via satellite phone.
Soon, the new iPhone 14 (with iOS 16 software updated with the new features coming in November 2022) will be able to use the Emergency SOS service in the United States and Canada to send text messages to emergency services via the Globalstar satellite network, only outside of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage.
Interoperability is enabled by the Qualcomm X65 chipset used in the new iPhones, which allows for the use of the 2.4GHz n53 band used by Globalstar satellites and recognized by the 3GPP consortium as an authorized band for 5G service.
- T-Mobile with Starlink (SpaceX)
T-Mobile has instead decided to rely on Starlink to offer 5G smartphones, in areas without coverage in the US, limited connectivity to text messaging.
More specifically, it will use the 1900 MHz spectrum that is part of the carrier’s 4G and now 5G network. SpaceX’s next-generation Starlink satellites—expected to launch next year—will be equipped with updated antennas designed to pick up signals from small radios. This means the connection should be as seamless as moving from one ground-based cell tower to another. Starlink Maritime enables connectivity even in the most remote areas for commercial ships, oil rigs, and yachts.
The company also hopes to add voice and data connectivity in the future (though messaging service developers will need to optimize their apps to ensure they work with the network).
- Ast-Space Mobile
Ast-Space Mobile will provide global connectivity with a new satellite constellation capable of interacting with users’ mobile phones.
The Texas-based company, whose mission is to eliminate connectivity gaps and make broadband accessible to all, confirmed that the BlueWalker 3 test satellite was successfully launched into space on September 10, 2022, from Cape Canaveral. The satellite communicates directly with control centers in Maryland, Colorado, and Australia.
Thanks to this cellular broadband technology, AST SpaceMobile has signed agreements with over 25 mobile network operators globally (including Vodafone, Rakuten Mobile, AT&T, and Orange), providing services to over 1.8 billion users.
After BlueWalker 3’s in-orbit configuration, connectivity tests will be conducted with mobile network operators and equipment vendors on every continent.

How Much Does a Satellite Phone Cost?
A satellite phone can be seen under the title ‘Satellite messenger’. As the later name implies, a Satellite phone is a device that can send SOS signal. Satellite phones are very essential for travelling in remote areas where network is not usually available. How much does a satellite phone cost? Well, that depends on a number of factors. A satellite phone also offers numerous communication services plus tons of features around. Its parameters are as follows
- It also works worldwide, but coverage varies by brand and country.
- The batteries are rechargeable.
- Requires a paid subscription to function like your smartphone (plans and fees vary widely).
- It can also be used to send other non-critical messages home (some devices of this type only send them), such as how you are and where you have arrived.
- Some models have two-way text messaging to make it easier to coordinate a rescue and add additional details to your rescuers after sending an SOS.
- It needs a good view of the sky for it to function.
- It has additional GPS navigation functions depending on the model.
Personal locator devices and satellite cell phones don’t all use the same satellite networks for SOS signals. Most work in major countries, but coverage can vary depending on the country and service you’re going to, so be sure to check with the manufacturer first for coverage.

How Satellite Phones Work
Satellite phones are similar to personal locators in that they allow you to send an SOS signal in an emergency from a remote location where cell phone coverage is sporadic at best, if at all. They have surpassed personal locators in popularity today, however, as they have additional features such as the ability to text in real time and GPS navigation.
Satellite phones are devices that rely on GPS satellites for their location and commercial satellite networks for their communications. Requests for assistance are routed to the privately operated GEOS International Emergency Response Coordination Centre, headquartered in Houston. The centre then coordinates with local emergency services and communicates with you via text messages as it progresses.
And like personal locators, satellite phones use global satellite networks, so they work anywhere. But even here, response times can be slower in countries where backups aren’t as great and emergency resources are limited. You’d also want to make sure the countries you’re going to allow GPS use. There are security-obsessed countries where it’s still not legal. Also, check with the manufacturer about current signal coverage to be sure when you’re going somewhere.
Where can you use a Satellite Phone?
Satellite phones can be used if you need to make or receive inside a building or a vehicle or even in a plane or boat. Satellites are not hindered by any disaster or dependent on land -based structures like cell towers, hence they can be used in the event of emergencies.
Benefits of Using a Satellite Phone
True, satellite phones do not offer lots of services like the regular phone types. Regardless, there are some benefits that only satellite phone users enjoy. Here are some among many benefits of owning a satellite phone:
- Satellite phones do not depend on land-based networks fail. They still work perfectly, even though network towers get bad as they do not depend on network towers.
- Landlines and cellular phones may get damaged under extremely bad weather changes. But not satellite phones.
- Satellite phones are known for durability.
- They can work any
- where in the world.
How to Take Care and Maintain Your Satellite Phones
To elongate the life span of your Satellite, you must take care and maintain them.
KEEP YOUR SATELLITE PHONE DRY
As with any other electronic devices, if you regularly expose your satellite phones to liquids and moisture, it can easily damage the electronic circuits.
What then, can you do if you accidently expose your satellite phones to liquid? Remove battery immediately and allow phone to completely dry before replacing the battery.
Do not keep satellite phones in the bathroom or humid areas.
DO NOT KEEP YOUR SATELLITE PHONES IN DUSTY PLACES
Dust can cause damage to your satellite phones. So, it is appropriate to keep your satellite phones away from dust.
HAVE A BACKUP DATA
Be sure to create a backup data for your contacts especially when service your satellite phone.
USE AN APPROVED ANTENNA ON YOUR SATELLITE PHONE
If your satellite antenna is bad and you wish to replace it, ensure that you get only the approved satellite antenna from the manufacturer. When you use unapproved antenna on your satellite phones, it could cause damage to it.
GET GOOD ACCESSORIES FOR YOUR SATELLITE PHONES
You need the following good accessories to maintain your satellite phones:
- Get spare batteries
- Approved external antennas
- Get solar chargers in case you can’t charge phones electronically.
- Use protective phone cases.
These accessories may cost a few tens- hundreds of dollars over time. For instance solar-charger can cost around US$50-300.
SUMMARY
You can extend the life span of your satellite by following the above maintenance tips and more.
How are personal location devices used?
Personal Locating Devices (PLBs) are smaller cousins of the technology (EPIRBs – Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons) used by fishermen and everyone around boats. When activated, they send out a powerful emergency SOS signal that is sent out via a global satellite network. In the US, for example, they are specifically monitored by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration).
After receiving your emergency message, the satellite system will relay your message to a network of agencies and organizations that are on the lookout for a response. Ultimately, your request will end up with an international rescue organization (with a local branch). Personal locators also use other satellite networks to find your location. In addition, most personal locators today can give emergency responders GPS coordinates of your location, making it easier for rescuers to find you. Some even have flashing beacons on them.
Since the satellite system and response agency are part of a global system, personal location devices work all over the world. The response may not be as robust in countries where resources are scarce, and there are a few countries that prohibit their use. Therefore, you should check with local agencies abroad before purchasing a personal location device.
What you Should Know About Satellite Phones & Internet Access
Do satellite phones provide internet access? Yes, but very few provide internet access. Many satellite phones, though, provide data services with quite limited bandwidth. So, if you needed a satellite phone for any internet service, you would need to get an added accessory like a Wi-Fi. A Wi-Fi enabled satellite device offers limited internet access, for compressed photos or certain email services, but is not suitable for browsing.
Do personal locators have to be registered?
When you purchase this device, the manufacturer will ask you to register online. It’s free, specifically with the NOAA SARSAT (Search and Rescue Satellite Aided Tracking) database. Your personal locator signal is then linked to your contact information listed there (name, address, emergency phone numbers for family contact, and medical issues). All of this will help better plan your rescue process.
You must update your personal data here every year or two. And if you change the owner of the locator (sell/rent), you must of course also change it here accordingly + the next owner must register their personal data again.
Thankfully, many states have enacted laws against frivolous use of such a service, which can cost you a massive fine. So, it’s better to carry more quality survival essentials than less that will discourage you from doing so!
So, if you are traveling on vacation to Spain, Italy or, for example, to Croatia, which is popular with Slovaks, you can take advantage of the more favourable prices valid for European roaming. However, if you are working abroad, for example, your operator may charge you additional fees for using your mobile phone in roaming for a long time. We will explain more below.
About Satellite Phones and Internet Services
Do they provide internet services? Yes, they do. A number of satellite phones offer very limited bandwidth of data services. Some satellite devices though, come with in-built WI-Fi. A built-in WiFi satellite phone offer limited internet. But if you have an external access to an accessory for internet, you can perform only any basic online functions

Prepaid vouchers are also available, making overall costs a mix of upfront device purchase and ongoing service fees.
Factors that Determine the Cost of a Satellite Phone
Just like any other phone type, the cost of a Satellite phone, depends on a lot of factors. Let’s highlight those factors for a moment.
- The Type and Brand of Satellite phone
- We have basic models of Satellite phones like the Thuraya XT-LITE or the Premium models like the Iridium Extreme 9575. The premium models usually cost lesser than the basic.
- Different brands, different cost price. Brands like Globalstar, Inmarsat and Iridium cost more, because they have higher coverage rates, more rugged and reliable.
- Data capability and Voice features
Satellite phones that are for only voice-only use, are cheaper than others. Moreover, satellite phones with more features like data communication, email, internet access and GPS usually cost more.
- Service Plan and Structure
Call charges (international or local calls), text message charges and data plans usually influence the cost of a satellite phone.
- Cost of Importation and Geographic Location
In some African countries like Nigeria and in Asia countries like India, the cost of satellite phones will be higher. This is due to high importation rate and heavy tax rates.
- Cost of Satellite Phone Accessories
Accessories like spare batteries, solar chargers and an external antenna attract extra costs.
- Licensing Regulations
Another factor that can determine the cost of a satellite phone, is Government or Licensing regulations that applies to your country. Also, some countries require may also require security clearance before you can acquire a satellite phone.
Regulated prices
Within the European Union, there are regulated prices for calls, data and SMS messages. If you travel away from home to another EU country, you do not have to pay any additional charges for using your mobile phone. Regulated prices apply to all residential customers.
The pricing policy for calls is therefore simple – you do not pay any extra fees for incoming and outgoing calls to EU countries. The same prices apply to you as you would pay for calls at home.
The same applies to SMS messages. The situation is different for data, where the amount of data for use abroad depends on the price of your flat rate. Even if you have an unlimited data package as part of your flat rate, for example, you can only use a certain amount when roaming in the EU. You can find an example of the calculation directly on the European Union website on the website of your operator. But first, let’s look at the individual operators.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION SESSIONS ON SATELLITE PHONES.
FAQ 1: How much do satellite phone services cost?
Satellite phone service usually costs around $40 monthly, in order to keep your satellite device active, inclusive of only 10 minutes talk time.
FAQ 2: Why is my smartphone not suitable for the wilderness?
You may have heard/read that a local national park has installed traditional cell towers. So, what about people who are passing by and just want to use their smartphones?
It is a fact that the spread is still growing and reaching considerable distances even outside of civilization. But this still pales in comparison to personal location devices and satellite phones. So, if you want to have a reliable way to call for help in an emergency, then in this matter smartphones and mobile phones do not stand a chance against both. Often in areas between the hills you are without a mobile signal, but satellites can see everything where there is no continuous barrier of thick trees above your head.
If it happens in places where you can use your smartphone, all the better, do it. But it’s better to have a backup.
FAQ 3: What special features do satellite phones have?
Satellite phones add tons of additional features and options, which again will vary quite a bit by model and manufacturer. This can include any combination of the following:
- Tracking routes and reporting progress to family back home.
- Topographic maps + navigation on them.
- Altimeter and barometer.
- Weather forecasts.
- Sending and receiving any messages.
- They can be paired with a smartphone via Bluetooth for increased functionality.
- They can be synchronized and controlled through some fitness and smartwatches.
- It can be displayed on social media.
Prices vary quite significantly, depending on the type and equipment.
FAQ 4: How long do personal locators with batteries last?
Personal locator devices come with a long-lasting lithium battery. This battery is inactive until you press the power button to activate the signal.
They are often subject to local regulations: for example, in the US, it is required to be able to transmit for 24 hours at -28.9°C. However, such temperatures indicate an extreme case and most will be able to transmit for around 30 hours under better conditions.
Since their only reason for existence is to provide you with an SOS signal and in the meantime, they are inactive until you press a button, their battery will last up to 5 years, even without charging. However, a certain disadvantage is that when you want to replace it, an authorized service is required and the costs for this are not negligible.
The battery will also need to be replaced after activation and your rescue, but some personal tracking device manufacturers usually do this for free after a rescue.
FAQ 5: Do satellite phones require a subscription?
Using a satellite phone requires a subscription and a monthly payment plan. And again, it doesn’t come cheap. The two major manufacturers (SPOT and Garmin) offer tons of options, so it’s as complicated as choosing the optimal cell phone plan.
You will also need to pay the activation and monthly fees indicated according to the selected plan and services. Most of them require an annual commitment, by the way, but monthly alternatives can also be found.
FAQ 6: How are satellite phones doing with battery life?
Optimistic assumptions of manufacturers speak of 1-2 days to 10-20 days. Of course, when you have numerous functions on a given device, it is a double-edged sword, which will shorten its endurance, for example, at the worst moment. Just like with your smartphone, you have to think about the rear wheels or have a solar charger.
FAQ 7: When to send an SOS signal?
Just like the universal rescue signal 112 (where 911 connects), the emergency signal here must be sent if and only if you are in immediate danger of life or loss of limb, etc. And if none of your own methods can get you out of danger.
As more and more people travel into the depths of the wilderness, the problem is that many amateurs call rescuers after the first blister and mosquito bite and then block them for people with broken spines, etc. Unnecessary rescues are a plague of similar services, and it is possible that you will encounter it.
FAQ 8: Can I use a Satellite phone indoors?
Satellite phones are usually for outdoor use with clear view to the sky. But they can also be used indoors especially close to window.
FAQ 9: Can I text with my Satellite phone?
Yes, you can text with your Satellite phones and even send emails with them.
FAQ 10: What happens if I do not renew my service plan?
FAQ 11: Are Satellite phone calls encrypted or secure?
Yes, most satellite phones offer a high level of security. Little wonder why it is used by Governments, big businesses and organizations.
FAQ 12: Can I use my Satellite phone indoors?
Yes. But to get the best connection, you must use your Satellite phone outside.
FAQ 13: Do Satellite phones have good battery longevity?
The battery life of any satellite phone largely depends on the type of network it operates with. There are only two types of networks for satellite phone, the low earth orbit, and the geosynchronous networks.
FAQ 14: Is It Better to Rent or Buy a Satellite phone?
The answer to that question depends on the purpose of getting the satellite phone. If you need it just for a while, say for a short vacation, film shoot or an emergency backup, then you may consider renting. But if you need it for a permanent use, then you should consider buying it. Renting though is low cost. For example, rental rates can be around US$ 25-50 daily.
CONCLUSION
Satellite phones are comes in handy in emergency events and even for personal use. They are very useful for reaching people in areas where they are no cellular services. The cost of satellite depends on a number of factors. Satellite phone service usually costs around $40 monthly, in order to keep your satellite device active, inclusive of only 10 minutes talk time.
